David

I spent my first real winter without power at nine years old — three days on a wood stove and melted snow while my dad walked the property line checking for downed lines. That was rural Montana in the '90s, and losing electricity for a few days wasn't an emergency, it was just weather. He taught me to read a sky before he taught me long division. I spent the years after that doing what a lot of people around here do — hunting season with my uncles, backpacking trips that went sideways just often enough to teach me something, a few seasons doing trail maintenance that turned into informal wilderness-first-responder training. None of it made me an expert. It made me someone who's had to actually use a tourniquet, actually eaten a freeze-dried meal on day nine of a trip, actually found out the hard way which water filters clog in silty creek water and which don't. I started The Survival Life because most of what's written on this topic online is either recycled from someone else's recycled list, or written by people trying to move product first and inform second. I'd rather tell you a filter is mediocre and save you the money. These days that means testing more gear in my garage than I'd like to admit, and writing the guides I wish someone had handed me back when I didn't know a bow drill from a hand drill.
